Wednesday 12th October 2016

Oh yes, apart from a mid-afternoon bath, I managed to spend the whole day in my dressing gown. I had to go outside once when I put the rubbish in the outside bin, but I didn’t even put on shoes to do that. I spent a Wednesday in my late forties without getting dressed and I wasn’t ill. That’s a victory for me.

I was meant to finalise the video AIOTM script for Sunday, but my brain instructed me that I needed to take it a little bit easy and I did some admin and wrote next week’s Metro column instead, sorted out another batch of limited edition programmes for the SCOPE donators and tried to book in some more RHLSTP guests.

I did make some progress with that and if you’re a monthly badger you will have had full news of the bookings that I’ve achieved, but joining Chris Addison will be the very funny stand up and actor Kerry Godliman. And I will announce more names in the next couple of days. Still waiting for absolute confirmation of the exciting guest that is doing 31st October, but it’s looking pretty certain and I’d book now if I was you. You won’t be disappointed and it will sell out once it’s announced.

It’s the only mildly tedious part of doing RHLSTP, trying to book the guests and provide a schedule that will both sell some tickets and introduce you to cool newer comedians who you may not have heard of. If we were a proper show we’d have a booker to do this for us, but it’s pretty much down to me, with some help from producer Ben. There are two empty spots looking up on the 24th October, which is slightly worrying, but there’s plenty of potential candidates. Why don’t big Hollywood stars and comedians just email me to tell me they’d like to do the show?

But it was cool to have a day where I could take things slightly easier. I did loads of cooking, making waffles for breakfast and chucking together an experimental, but still quite nice, plaice with caper butter for dinner. As much as I enjoy my work, doing stuff like this makes me feel very happy. I’d like to turn the pace down a little bit and spend more time doing stuff round the house and with my family or just on my own in my dressing gown (not THAT!…. necessarily).

We’re not getting much time to watch TV at the moment, but we’re up to episode 3 of Freaks and Geeks, which I am loving, because it’s uncynical and celebrates the good and the bad of being at school and instead of doing the easy thing and have plans turn to disaster, sometimes things just go OK and you see the characters enjoying dancing, or they have a house party and they don’t get into trouble. It’s very sweet and filled with writers and actors who’d go on to dominate Hollywood. So obviously it was cancelled after one series. Obviously.

I was very much a Geek at school and indeed me and my pals went out Trick or Treating when we were a bit too old to do so, like the geeks did tonight (though we did it with more knowing irony, yet still enjoyed ourselves secretly in an unironic fashion). Freaks and Geeks brilliantly reminds you of the highs and lows of that Inbetweener age, the Geeks largely happy go lucky and wanting to enjoy life, although always in fear of a beating or humiliation and too weird to attract the opposite sex and the Freaks, hampered by their own desire to look cool and seemingly not care. The main character is somewhere in-between the two groups. It’s just perfect. So obviously it was cancelled after one series. Obviously.
