This old Lee and Herring sketch got mentioned quite tangentially on Bluesky today (someone had found the pub we mention, the Red Lion and Pineapple in Acton -probably what we were referencing, but I don't remember the pub myself).
I remember filming this sketch though and I always thought there was a bit of mileage in these characters, even if cool and uncool teachers might have been covered comedically before. There was a little more to these two though.
It's a proper "Before They Were Famous" sketch though as it features both Kelly Brook and Daniel Mays who have gone on to greater success than whoever the bloke playing Twatty Harris was. He could be on a show called "Before They Were Never Famous". Ah well, never mind. The marking must be done.
As I remarked on the DVD commentary of the series (recorded many years later) quite a large proportion of the Fist of Fun audience have gone on to enjoy a more acclaimed career than me.
I commented on bluesky that I still call Daniel Mays, Patrick Nuffy, whenever I see him on anything. In fact I am so used to calling him Patrick Nuffy that I had to google his actual name to post that comment.
Ed Sinclair commented "Did a short film with him a while ago. I said, “I was watching a Fist Of Fun DVD the other day…”. He said, “Fucking hell. Fist of Fun. I think that was my first ever job.”"
The rest of his career has been an attempt to recapture that high. If only Fist of Fun had been more successful then every day someone would shout ""No-Pints Nuffy", The Fifth Form Oedipus" at Daniel Mays and he'd be unable to get any other work as he was so associated with the role.

Today's poolside book was Saltwash by Andrew Michael Hurley, not an author I had heard of, but that's due to my own general ignorance about modern literature. A publisher had sent it to me and I'd just happened to grab it off the quite big pile of books that publishers have sent me before I left home, as it looked interesting, but also crucially, not too long. I am very much enjoying it. As with Watson's book, it's a tense read as you try to work out what the Hell is going on and what might happen and I am whizzing through this one to find out. You'll have to wait til October to read it, because you're not special like me, but you can read his other three any time you like!
There's a great retro RHLSTP out today with the fabulous Amy Gledhill (who is on the new series of Last One Laughing), available as a full free video for the first time (plus you can see the impressive view from my hotel balcony in the intro).

Or, if you would like us to make some advertising revenue to keep this rickety old jalopy running then please listen here.
