For a show that started as a throwaway bit of improvisation, Ally and Herring's Twitch of Fun has started to require an awful lot of preparation. Not because, as Ally claims, that I have a team of 10 writers squirrelled away in my bathroom, shouting ideas to me via an ear piece on the night and carefully scripting the seemingly ad hoc conversations, but because I need to have a look through the papers and work out what each of the characters will be up to this week and now we have a swish studio and photo system to work through. It has higher production values that most lockdown things on TV. You can catch up with it on Youtube or wherever you get your podcasts. (leave a review or subscribe on Apple podcasts here)There were lots of surprises tonight and a brilliant new character of a ghostly sounding child whose doll was broken to finish the whole thing off. The hardest ventriloquism is making it appear like someone is talking in the distance.
I am really enjoying doing these and basically showing you my workshopping. Each week we seem to move things on a little bit and I have ambitions to add some jingles and animations to make it even more of a “show”. I was super tired today (I've done way too many podcasts and interviews this week) but that all fell away once I got started and the show went on for over an hour. Is this going to be my life now? When I had my tarot cards read back in July the lady told me that I'd have to make a decision about where my career was going in the next month or so. Is this the direction I am now going in? I haven't managed to write a set for Sunday at the Clapham Grand so I think I might have to do a ten minute paper review with Ally.
Listening to a couple of audio books at the moment, Maria Konnikova's The Biggest Bluff (ahead of her appearance on RHLSTP next Wednesday at 3pm) https://www.amazon.co.uk/Biggest-Bluff-Learned-Attention-Control/dp/B086Q279HB/ref=pd_rhf_gw_p_img_1?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=PCZSNV5V5WTX75NM2S79.
She's going to be a top guest I think - the lessons she has learned from going from a total poker newbie to a pro level player in a matter of months extend beyond the realm of card games.
Both books are recommended, but I am particularly impressed with /jealous of Adam's audio book as he's really gone that extra mile to make it worth the entrance fee. And that really puts the pressure on the rest of us.
It's not just that he has a bonus podcast with his friend and erstwhile double act partner Joe Cornish (I've got a bonus podcast in mine too, anyone can think of that), but the jingles and extra bits of chat and aside comments are lovely. He's put in so much work and he deserves your custom. His audiobook basically changes the landscape and shows what is possible in terms of giving extras and enhancements, as well as the book. The man is a genius and I can't wait to find out what was inside his dad's briefcase.
I am recording my audiobook at the start of October and I am going to have to think of some ways that I can fill mine with Easter eggs and extra content too. You can preorder the book and the audiobook from wherever you preorder your books and audiobooks.
