Doing an insane amount of podcasts at the moment. I had an unexpected one this lunchtime as I stepped in as a last minute replacement in lovely Isy Suttie's “The Things We Do For Love” podcast. We had a long and frank chat about our dating disasters and finding the right one in the end. I have had some disastrous relationships but felt looking back that I was still glad they happened. Many were painful for one or other or both of the participants, but even the craziest ones were fun (at least for some of the time), but also taught me the most about how I should be behaving and who I should be avoiding.
We looked back at me leaving dead flowers on the doorstep of the woman I was dating (but who I had to keep secret), the girlfriend who was proposed to by her ex the day before we went on holiday (and spent all week ringing him on the not inexpensive hotel phone) and how my social awkwardness and fear of imposing on people led to a lot of lonely nights in the 1990s (but also how it probably all suited me really). I am an odd dichotomy of romantic and slag, but also a product of my times, I feel, where lack of education and mixed messages about love and sex and boys and girls made relationships confusing and dates feel like something that had to won by trickery or bombast rather than honesty.
Honesty is the best policy. You can always find someone who wants the same things as you do, whether that's commitment or very much not commitment.
Otherwise I was preparing for tonight's RHLSTP with the admirable and fascinating Sindhu Vee. She's a tough and honest comedian and commentator and I respect her very much for her confidence and hard work. But her childhood was fairly manic and the relationship with her parents loving, but complex and most interestingly she came to comedy very late, after working in investment banking and being a mother of three. And was immediately just excellent. She's definitely one to watch (if you're not watching already).
Chris Evans (not that one) and I have been working on getting the remote shows looking ever more professional and have had fun (and a little exasperation) in setting up a green screen and a little insert for photos. You won't believe where I was during this week's podcast. You can find out by watching here.
RHLSTP with Daniel Sloss is now up on audio
