Haven't done too many Park Runs this year or much running at all. And it shows. I plodded round the course today in 32 minutes and some spare change. A little way off the sub 25 I managed about two years ago. Having cancer was the best thing that happened to my health. Of course all that matters is I got there and I got round, but it's hard to believe that I was running each of those kilometers over a minute faster.
I may have to accept that I will never get that back, just like I have to accept that the sub 20 minute 5kms that I would have been capable of in my earlier running days (well maybe 22 mins - I never really kept records) are also beyond me.
I resisted Park Runs for a long time because I thought they would be full of nerds. But that's the reason I like them now. I fit right in. Phoebe's football returns in September so I will only be able to make the occasional one. Hopefully I can make up for it with some runs on my own - the nerds do help me run faster though. So God help me.
As I ran, I listened to Dave Cohen's novel, Stand Up Barry Goldman  which is clearly informed by his own comedy journey and even though I am not doing Edinburgh it was interesting to experience one of the 1970s ones, where all the kids were punks and Rik Mayall was on the scene. Will be talking to Dave about this at some point and I know he has a lot of stories to tell, but it's an enjoyable listen, as well as a history lesson. Because fucking Hell, the 70s are a long time ago. It doesn't come with a pumping beat to it though, so doesn't make you run faster!
We had friends round for lunch and even though I thought I'd eaten pretty healthily my Zoe score took a kicking. It's easy to do when you're cooking all your own food, but the minute you bring in stuff at restaurants or bought from the shop your score drops pretty significantly. I am not going to be disheartened though. My average score over this week was 69 (dudes) and I scored high in all the various sections (and ate 44 different plants or produce of plants), but we're off on holiday over the next couple of weeks and I think it might be trickier to score high, but I am going to attempt to avoid the really bad foods and we're self-catering so you never know.
