Day two of rehearsals and we're all getting to know each other: the ice is breaking and we're having fun and testing the limits of how far we can take the mickey. When you start a new project like this with people you've not worked with before you worry that someone might turn out to be a bit of an arse, or get all starry and superior or just have a flatulence problem, but so far everyone seems to be extremely pleasant and down to earth and friendly and fragrant. Unless I am the arse and don't realise it. But that's OK. It's my script, they have to put up with me.
There was a lot more proper acting to do today and absolutely no kissing at all. There were times when it actually felt like working, but no-one got too stressed and the main mood of the day was hilarity. I spent a lot of time laughing at Gordon Kennedy, who is a very witty and charming man, but also has a funny face.
Everyone seems to be enjoying the script, which can sometimes be a bad sign (it turns out that the cast are the only people laughing), but I have a good feeling about it. Everyone is really fucking good, with the possible exception of one gurning, grinning idiot, but he's doing his best. It's an unusual script (apparently) because it involves a lot of talking. It's people having conversations about stuff, without explosions and car chases and lesbian sex (though now I think about it I might put some of that in the next one - because I can). But I think this is a good thing. And some of the talking is at least about lesbian sex, so there's something for everyone.
So looking good so far. Fingers crossed.
