The illness continues. When I finally woke up after a night of coughing, tossing and turning I thought that I felt better, but I was tired and woozy all day, just feeling run down and coldy. ItÂ’s not enough to seek any kind of medical assistance, but it pretty much scuppers me getting anything interesting done on these last few days.
I basically just had my breakfast, went back to bed, pottered round before lunch a bit and then went back to bed, woke up mid afternoon and did not much before heading out for dinner, which exhausted me and now I am back on my bed. Being sick on holiday sucks, though this tiredness does turn the end of the break into a mirror image of the start. I was hoping to get home refreshed, but the prospect of a 12 hour flight feeling like this is not very appealing. I am hopeful that a good nightÂ’s sleep may sort me out. Today was pretty dull and unless I am well enough to go on a boat trip to see some of the other islands then tomorrow doesnÂ’t look much better. It would have been nice to have someone here to play cards with today, or even to have thought to bring a pack of cards, but the book I was reading was not doing much for me and the two others I have left did not appeal to this miserable version of myself, so I mainly watched DVDS of the Planet Earth series, which I have been enjoying and give me the illusion of being involved in some kind of massive nature safari, but if anything they just remind me of my holiday in Africa last year and how much fun and variety I had on that, whilst being in the same place every day and in a bad mood made me slightly miserable for almost the first time. I wish I was going home tomorrow at the moment, but maybe I will be glad of the extra day if the sun is shining and my chest and head are clear.
Seeing David Attenborough effortlessly explain some of the world’s wonders made me cross with the religious fundamentalists who insist the world is only 8000 years old, despite the huge amount of evidence against such an idea. In my present grumpy mood it made me want to have anyone who insisted on the literal truth of old books put in prison until they admitted they were wrong. This is obviously going too far, though at least I didn’t suggest executing them, but I can’t believe that modern governments countenance approving schools which teach creationism as absolute fact. David Attenborough is great, though they shouldn’t have made him refer to the helicopter crew as “The Chopper Squad”. It just seemed wrong to hear his voice attempting to say something cool, that isn’t actually cool, even without the potential pathetic double entendre. Apart from that though top marks to the BBC and the ridiculously brave and patient camera crews who put all this amazing footage together. I had to be trapped on a desert island to watch it (I’ve had it for some time), but it was the only perk of being ill that I managed to get through maybe four episodes.
Apart from that very little to report. Sorry to hear about Pavarotti and that bloke from Emmerdale. Not as sorry as I am to see that York City are continuing their disappointing start to the season. I have my priorities right. OK, itÂ’s nine o clock and I am going to bed. I might watch another Planet Earth, but I might well not. I hope I can manage to stay up a bit later when I get home, but maybe the over 40 thing has finally kicked in. Would explain why I am getting so much pleasure from nature documentaries.
