Last year I wrote that I was thinking of learning Italian. Predictably this came to nothing. Like when I said I was going to learn to cook. And all the other things I said I'd do (except the Marathon, Boat Race, Parachute jump.... OK, I'm not that bad. I'll lay off myself).
But I've been thinking that maybe I should learn English properly first. Especially given it is my job to write it, I feel I should have a better command.
So I've decided that when I'm reading and I come to a word that I'm not 100% certain of I am going to find out its exact definition and write it down. It's amazing how many times I just skirt over a vaguely familiar word, guessing its meaning or assume I know the definition, when upon checking I discover I had got it totally wrong.
Who'd have thought "approbation" meant "approval". I always thought it was the opposite. And however many times I see the word "inexorable", I always have to look it up. And you're going to have to too. Unless you already know what it means, you swot!
I will attempt to use some of my new found words in Warming Up, in the hope that the meanings will then stick in my booze adled brain. I am sure you will be the first to let me know if I use my fresh arsenal of vocabulary inappositely.
I hope this meets with your approbation. It doesn't matter if it doesn't. I am inexorable on this point.
I'm off on a couple of mini-breaks this week, so as usual will attempt to update warming up as and when, but it may be a few days. Bye!
