Sure kids are never-ending fun. But I tell you what else is sadly-ending fun: The kids spending the night and most of the day at their grandparents.
My wife and I spent the morning in bed watching TV. I am sure we used to do this all the time, but it’s a rare event now. We finished off watching the excellent “Girls5Eva” and that took a punt on White Lotus. It’s one of a number of recent dramas (The Crown and Succession being the main ones) which show you the lives of the privileged rich and make out like it’s an empty and hollow existence. I am not sure being super rich would be that bad. I find my current level of richness much better than the level of having no money that I began with. It’s nice to be able to buy stuff at the supermarket or take an occasional cab without having to make sure you have enough in the bank to cover it. Maybe one day someone will write a drama about how unhappy my level of wealth makes me. Or maybe the rich people are just trying to put the rest of us off by making being rich look horrible and like a prison.
White Lotus just made me pine for a holiday in a nice hotel where I was able to sit by a pool and read. I guess those holidays are pretty much gone until I am 70 (if I want to do it without the kids) though we might manage something with the kids, where they can look after themselves, in about ten years.
So possibly never.
Catie and me managed a few cool holidays before we spawned, but as with everything, including lying in bed on Saturday, you don’t know what you’ve got til it’s gone. But it’s weird watching fucked up people, one of whom is going to die (that’s not really a spoiler as it’s info you get in the first minute of the show), though I suspect (and I don’t know yet) that the person who dies is not the person they hint it is in that opening.
Also it’s a drama where one of the characters thinks he’s got testicular cancer. It was a surprise to confront that with no warning, but I found I was more annoyed about the subject being covered (even briefly) in another drama, when I’ve already done it (in my sitcom) and want to do it more.
It’s quite an interesting and tense drama and I’m interested to see how it plays out. But it’s not many eps and is called Season One, so maybe we won’t be getting any answers by the current end.
I managed to do some writing and go for a 6km run (first one in a while, but it went OK) whilst listening to Stephen Fry talking about Victorian female killers.
The kids came home at about 6pm. Ernie has decided he wants a real magic wand so he can make people fly and make himself fly. I’ve told him that this might be tricky, but he’s pretty insistent. I never had this kind of problem in the old days either.
