7412/19932

Trying to work out if I would suck off a 92 year old for a billion quid. And yes I would. So just putting it out there. Any billionaires reading, do get in touch. But best of luck to Rupert Murdoch. Hopefully he’s found true love at last.  I now need him to live to maybe 94 to get my shot at marrying him. As someone commented on Twitter: Suck-cession.

About 17 months ago I ordered a new electric car - A VW ID3 which was meant to be delivered in about 6 months. But supply issues and Ukranian war meant that the delivery was delayed and also meant you couldn’t complain about it without looking like an entitled idiot. I am one, but I don’t want to look like one. It was such a long time that I’d almost forgotten it was coming. Luckily my other car was still only four years old and so running fine, though I had agreed to sell it to my father-in-law so he had to wait too.
Doesn’t augur well for the future of the planet that electric cars are so hard to come by.
Anyway I picked up the new car today. It’s (I think) the 6th car I’ve owned (7th if you count the one I bought as a prize for the Edinburgh TMWRNJ) and the second brand new one I’ve bought. My second hand eGolf has served me well for the last four years, but I wanted something with a bit more range. Though it’s been great for all local journeys and comfortably got me to London and back for gigs. I only ever charged it away from the house twice, and only to work out how you do that.
This morning I dropped my old car off with my parents-in-law and then my father-in-law drove me in his new old car to pick up my new new one.
I had test-driven an ID3 but so long ago that I’d basically forgotten everything about it. It’s pretty different than the old car - the gears are controlled from an little twisty thing above the steering wheel, you just press a button to make the thing go and it’s got enough screens and functions to feel a bit like a space ship. My main thought was that Catie was going to hate it. She won’t buy an iPhone without a home button. She hates change.
My other main thought was that I was bound to scratch the car straight away (as hard as the distance indicators and self-parking functions might make that. Apparently the car can park itself, with some help from the driver pressing the brake and changing gear - we’ll see. Supposedly you can also set it to warm itself up in the morning so you’re ready to go without having to de-ice the windscreen.
I don’t get very excited about cars, but I love gadgets and this thing is like a super-gadget that you can play with, but which will also take you places. But even I am a bit overwhelmed by it. And trying to work out the difference between D and B on the gear stick and when I should use which one (I only noticed today that there was a B mode on the other electric car too - I think it somehow helps recharge the battery through braking, but I am not in any way sure.
Anyway, I will break it all soon and should not be allowed new things, but am hoping that the car actually has a range of over 200 miles, as advertised. The old one would sometimes promise 170 but would realistically do 100 max and sometimes the 60 mile round trip to London would almost test its capacity.

Lucky me, anyway. Maybe I don't even need to suck off Rupert Murdoch.
