Had a double shock tonight when I read the news that Dickie Davies had died. The first shock was that he was still alive. I thought he’d died at least 20 years ago. The second shock was that he was now dead. Having only just found out he was alive, to find out so quickly that he was dead was hard news to take. What an amazing broadcaster he was. But whoever reanimated him has a lot to answer for. RIP.
Talking of legends from the 70s I found myself singing the Wombles theme to the kids today (Phoebe had been talking about the Paddington theme and I accidentally went into the Wombles instead). And as memorable as the song part of the theme is (and I still remember every word) the absolutely banging bit about the tune is the instrumental at the start. So keen to underground and overground I’d never really spotted what a piece of genius it is. And they just throw it away at the start.
Have a listen. Let’s get it back to number one. But just the intro. Not the rest.
I was then sad that Bernard Cribbins was gone too. But at least I knew he had died.
My health kick has not been going very well so far this year, but am trying again and resolving to cut out as much sugar as I can (I will never give up my daily Solero) and get as active as possible. I ran 5K this morning including some hills and then took my daughter to the rec to play basketball and football. She beat me at both. I let her win at football, but again she is much better at basketball than me (though if I upped the aggression and blocked her when she was trying to shoot I reckon I could still take her). I really enjoy these matches though. As the youngest kid (with two siblings who were quite a bit older) I always yearned for a new brother or sister to play with. It’s only taken 50 years, but I have managed to finally make a couple of playmates. Hopefully the will help me on the path back to fitness.
There was one nasty moment when Phoebe and I both ran for the ball whilst playing football and she tripped and I nearly crashed down on her straight leg. I managed to pull away before any serious pressure was applied but if she’d taken the full force we might have had to go to A and E (and I don’t want to go through that again). It’s terrifying to think that you could hurt your own kid like that, but I am glad my daughter is so tough and brave. She loves sport and with my decline and her daily improvement it won’t be long before I need to break her leg in order to have a chance of beating her.
Some amazing line-ups coming up for RHLSTP at the Leicester Square Theatre, including Zoe Lyons and Joe Cornish this Monday (20th). I am surprised there are tickets left for any of the shows with guests announced as it’s wall to wall superstars. WHAT DO YOU PEOPLE WANT? Come along if you can. It’s so much better with a crowd and is always more fun live.
