Hooray, my gig in Brighton was another good one. I even did my 9 yoghurt routine for the first time and it went better than I had expected (though I lost them a bit by the end). I don't think it will necessarily work with every audience, but it felt good that I was able to attempt something that was about an attitude, rather than just a load of gags. I think it's the kind of routine that will leave some people cold, whilst others are crying with laughter. I can think of nothing I would rather do! I think there are a few other things in Warming Up that will make good stand up material, and it's good to think that this heap of junk might start to pay for itself at some point!
The rest of the stuff went well too and I was relaxed and even making stuff up as I went along. There was one drunk girl who had been talking throughout the show, even when expertly put down by the compere. She was loquacious and crapulous, not the best combination in an audience member from a comedian's point of view. Or indeed from the rest of the audience's point of view- they all already hated her, when I commented "You're the only woman in the world that a man would put Rohypnol in your drink and then leave you in the pub!" Ha ha, I am funny. No, I really am actually quite funny.
As well of the coolness of driving down the highway, listening to the theme from Arthur on my iPod I think what's been good about the gigs I've done this weekend is that they've all been full. With several hundred people in attendance. This is something which is a somewhat rare with my own gigs. And although there were certainly a few people in each crowd who knew who I was, these were largely people who were new to me and my yoghurt eating ways, so it's doubly satisfying that the stuff is working.
It will be interesting to see how gigs over the next few months. I think I can pretty much guarantee that the yoghurt story will be in the Edinburgh show in some form. Hopefully it will take on a life of its own, like some kind of bio yoghurt. Thanks for coming to the gigs if you did and do check the gig guide regularly if you want to see me, as new dates are being added all the time.
