Cambridge Corn Exchange for RHLSTP tonight, a venue I played in the 90s with SG Lee, but not since then. I think I had more in today than we would have done on that occasion, and it was certainly my biggest solo audience in Cambridge with 450+ in. The venue can hold over twice that amount, but I was still very happy with this.
And the show was full of incident with a belching contest and an impressive display of fellatio and that was just backstage!!!
It wasn’t. It was on stage.
The room was echoey and I struggled to hear my guests at time, but I had fun with impressive newish stand up Olga Koch and inventive and weirdly friendly to each other in real life double act Max and Ivan. I had enjoyed catching up on these acts’ material during the day. Olga has a fun “sketch” (though she claims it is just a real thing) where she eats an effigy of her ex made out of cake. Which feels like something I might do. Olga’s dad was briefly deputy Prime Minister of Russia and I could sympathise with as my dad was my headmaster. Not the deputy head. So my example was much more impressive. There was another unexpected command to produce gaseous effluent, which gave me a flashback to the Rob Rouse RHLSTP (which seems like years ago, but was actually only back in July)
The backstage interview with Max and Ivan suggested we’d have fun when Ivan confidently said Max had used a shoesmith in Edinburgh and on stage his choice of what he’d take home from any museum or art gallery in the world had me in tears of laughter and surprise. Also he revealed he still had two baby teeth which had never fallen out. Oh man, we had fun with that.
The venue was echoey and I struggled a bit to hear my guests properly with my old useless ears, but we got through this mildly disorientating issue OK I think.
So it was nice to take a step up in venue, even if there is a bit of work to do if I am going to fill a room like this and it was good to be within easy driving distance of home. The days of staying in a Travelodge with a bogey on the shower curtain are gone (though they might return - the showbiz journey can go down as well as up).
