The ComedyPodcastDevoted Facebook group had been running a World Cup of podcasts and RHLSTP had made the final. I went to bed last night with about 2 hours to go, with a reasonably comfortable lead over Elis James and John Robins in second place, with Do the Right Thing and No Such Thing As a Fish trailing behind. Surely, for once, I was going to win one of these meaningless internet votes.
But I woke up, as I have so many times since 2016 to find the seeming result that I went to bed confident about, had not transpired. No Such Thing As A Fish had leapt forwards and tomorrow’s podcast guest James Harkin was jubilantly enjoying his genius last minute tactic of getting the million followers of QI to vote. I was second. But not even to who I had assumed would defeat me in my sleep.
It’s my default position and I accept it with good grace.
Not better, but at least I’d had a proper sleep so could attack the day with a bit more vigour. Catie wasn’t going to get much of a Mother’s Day as she had to go to Cardiff for a book event, but the kids had made her cards and Phoebe’s ones were particularly touching. When will there be a Father’s Day though? Wouldn’t be allowed would it. Even though fathers do up to 20% of the parenting (most of them do way less than that but luckily one bloke did that much once so the statistic still holds good).
The clocks had moved forwards too so Ernie’s sleep patterns were all over the place. We were going out for lunch, hoping he’d be snoozing, but I spent most of the time walking the pram up and down the gorge as he failed to sleep and my brill went cold.
But at least the mums (apart from Catie) got to enjoy their lunch.
We got back to my parents at about the same time as she did and we then had the joy of packing and taking the kids on a 3 to 4 hour car journey. But they actually behaved pretty well and we got through it without many tears and so rather joyous laughter as Ernie discovered “In The Night Garden” and seemingly found Makka Pakka to be the single funniest thing he’d ever seen. Nothing funny about stone clearing though.
Before we’d left we’d been talking about April Fool’s Day and my dad told Phoebe how he’d once fooled my mum early in their marriage by bringing her breakfast in bed, but her boiled egg was just an empty shell. Phoebe seemed to like the idea. I said we could trick mummy in the morning.
And at bed time I told stories of fantastical April Fool’s involving cakes being place beyond covered pits in the garden and Phoebe seemed to warm to the day even more. She told me she was going to get up early to trick me. I told her I was going to get up earlier to trick her.  What laughter there would be in the morn.
