I am way behind on my writing and exhausted, but fuck it, I was having a day off with my family today. It started early as we were going to a comedians’ breakfast at London Zoo. Loads of comics who have been involved with fundraisers for the place got to come along with their families for a mini tour. We had to be there at 9am, but luckily before 9 on a Sunday morning is one of the few times when driving in London is quick and easy, so it was only mildly painful getting there. It’s rare to set an alarm these days and even rarer to be woken by one. Annoyingly I had been sleeping deeply for once and it was a wrench,
But worth it. It was a good group of comedians, pretty much all with kids, leading me to remark to Rob Delaney that only the cool and nice ones have children. He argued that maybe the uncool ones with kids just didn’t have anything to do with them. Which might be the case. Also I guess that none of the comedians with any kind of exciting lives would have been able to get here by 9am. We once knew how to party (well not me so much), but in return we missed out on private early morning parties at London Zoo. So who are the real losers?
We got up close with snails and scary insects and spiders in the bug house. Then we fed some some tiny yellow monkeys and finally went on to look at the tigers. Phoebe still talks about the time we saw the tigers before Christmas (as well as a time a dog sniffed her when we were out for a walk at her grandparents’ - I wonder if she’ll always have those as her first memories), so it was cool to see them again. And a really nice treat to have the zoo to ourselves for a couple of hours. We passed a mechanical clock at one minute to the hour and we all stopped to watch whatever was going to happen. But the clock ticked to ten and the expected display did not occur. As the zoo isn’t open at that time, the first time the clock does its thing is at eleven. But anticipating something that doesn’t happen is almost as much fun and certainly more funny then it actually happening.
It was a tough day to get through, because when there’s not escape from tiredness when you’ve got a nearly 2 year old to look after and chase through a zoo. I wasn’t sure I’d make it to her bed time, but somehow we got through a daddy and daughter afternoon and I broke my one drink rule and had half a bottle of wine with dinner, before watching some more Timeless, my wife correctly pointing out how useless it was having a historian from the pre-changed universe along on the ride, as realistically once one bit of history has changed, all history will have changed and she’d only be any use on events that happened before the first branching off in time. But in Timeless major changes in history only affect a few outcome, because the people who write Timeless wilfully don’t care about the rules of time travel. It’s all right. I am not going to let it affect me and I am going to rise above it and suspend my disbelief about something that is, let’s face it, not possible. Red wine and a day with my family meant I fell asleep fast.
Tomorrow I attempt to write three episodes of my sitcom. But to be fair if I get halfway through one I will be delighted.
