Really missing  How I Met Your Mother. Hope they make some more.
I took the kids to get their hair cut and then on to a nearby dry cleaners to get a jacket altered. The lady who worked there seemed surprised to see me dealing with two kids alone and trying and failing to stop my daughter touching everything, and commented that lots of parents were coming in with kids this week and asked if their mum was at work.
Maybe she thought I was so useless at solo parenting that this must be my first time or maybe she was old-fashioned and thought that mums are meant to look after the kids. “No,” I said, “She’s having a massage.”
This was true, though to be fair to my wife, this was because she’d hurt her neck. But in the eyes of this lady I was now a superhero or possibly some dolt, who took on the hardship of the kids whilst my wife lived it up.
Of course we both work on this together and there are as many times when my wife is doing the child care so that I can pamper myself by clearing stones from a field. It’s just weird to me that it’s still remarkable when a man is doing child care. Maybe I am a superhero (or a dolt) though. Maybe I’m the only one.
If so, you’re missing out. Sure it was stressful trying to make sure my son stayed still so he didn’t get his ears cut off at the barbers or that my daughter didn’t cover fine lace in sticky finger prints, but it’s also cracking fun to hang around with these two tiny anarchists who don’t care about the rules of society. And who point at people eating meals in restaurant windows and ask what they are doing.
I can’t get over the fact that Jacob Rees-Mogg never changed a nappy despite being a dad to 100 children. This means he absolutely never spent any time solo with any of his kids. Or if he did he just let them sit in their own shit. Changing nappies is one of the funnest bits too.
