Another sold out gig at the Comedy Box in Bristol and it went really well, which was a relief as when I was here in December I had had a bit of a tough time. My mum and dad came to see the show tonight and I had been a bit worried that it might be slightly full on in places for them, but they seemed happy enough at the end. Though when I asked "Do you think my dad is proud of my wish to have sex with a vagina in the leg of Jesus?" and then added, "Are you proud of me, dad?" My dad just laughed. He is justly ashamed. And rightly so.
The best moment was when a bloke in the audience was trying to take a photo of me as I did the old people characters I turned away just as a man was trying to take a photo. He shouted out complaining, asking me to turn back and I apologised for having the temerity to get on with the show when obviously him getting a good shot was more important. But then the old people characters went into a long discussion about whether the man had been trying to get evidence of the amazing thing he was witnessing. He'd actually been taken in by my incredible characterisation of two old people on a bonfire that he was convinced he was actually seeing it. He'd be saying to his friends - I went to see a comedian last night and then suddenly in the middle of the show he disappeared and two old people on fire on a bonfire appeared. Look, I've got a photo.... I don't understand it, it just looks like one fat 40 year old man, not on fire, but there were definitely two old people, on fire."
Then I was relieved to be heading back to my own bed. It feels like I have been away for longer than five days. I have travelled around 780 miles so far on the tour and there's a whole lot further to go before I am done.
I got home to find my Vaio, which I have been putting up with despite its many problems, wouldn't boot up. This was very frustrating as I had written a magazine article this afternoon, which I thought I might have lost. I finally managed to get into the computer in safe mode, but then had to write out the whole article by hand, which took ages. I got writer's cramp, which you would think was an occupational hazard for a writer, but I actually do so little with a pen now that my hand couldn't cope with having to work in the old fashioned way. I probably haven't written at speed like this since I did my last exam. I used to be great at writing fast, without consequence, but my handwriting degenerated to be scarcely legible and my hand was seizing up. Annoyingly when I rebooted again the computer sluggishly came to life and I was able to email the article off. But it really is time to get a new computer and to save all the work from this one. But will I be a Mac or a PC. I still can't quite decide.
