I had gone for a run this morning, but had not slept for long enough and fell into a walk at half a mile and then went for a coffee instead. I went to the Costa on Goldhawk Road. It used to be a pub and one that I frequented a bit in the 1990s. But this seemed apt. Because later I would be going to an arts centre that used to be a church. Things change. But I never worshipped there when it was a church and I did drink in this coffee shop when it was a pub, so that has more of an impact. Churches becoming comedy venues and pubs becoming coffee shops. Two strong indicators in the way our country has changed.

We’d misplaced our sandwich toaster for a  few months, but yesterday my wife found it at the back of the cupboard we’ve been keeping the baby stuff in. I was super excited. There’s nothing like a homemade toasted sandwich, where you are control in the ratio of cheese to pickle. And for lunch today I made myself two packed ham, cheese and pickle toasties. A bit too packed as it turned out. Because as I struggled to pull the jaws of the Breville shut, the handle snapped off in my hand. After this long wait fate colluded to destroy my toasted sandwich dreams.

I don’t have that many toasted sandwiches, but this is actually the second time this has happened to me. our last sandwich toaster handles also came off (that was a posher one) so either I am incredibly strong or I massively overfill my sandwiches or toasted sandwich makers are not as good as they used to be. I think it’s mainly the latter. How very disappointing. My Breville had been lost and then been found and now it was lost again. I managed to make these last sandwiches after a fashion by pushing down on the machine manually, but I won’t be doing that again. The machine and my occasional toasted sandwich dreams are over.

Maybe the sandwiches were a bit big. I felt a bit bloated on the annual trip to Colchester Arts Centre and massively tired too. This is another venue that I have played on most if not all of my one man tours (I can’t remember if we ever came here as Lee and Herring) and it’s one of my favourites. And I have built up an audience of 300+ here, which is exactly what I need to sell out, proving that it is possible to crack smaller towns with enough persistence.

Colchester Arts Centre still looks like a church (unlike the Costa which has lost all its pubness)  I love the small statues of the soldier and sailor, giving memorial to the war dead that now look down on me each year in the dressing room. I grow old, whereas fittingly they never will. They are a reassuring presence. I wonder how many more times I will see them.

Anyway lovely gig. Next week I go to Birmingham, Edinburgh (sold out), Glasgow (nearly sold out), York and Norwich (sold out).

And the design for the AIOTM kickstarter tea-towel is now up on the kickstarter page. After a bright start things have stalled a little bit and I think we might not make it this time, but every quid counts (though ideally we want another 2000 people to give us about £40 each)
