I got a little lie in this morning and woke to find that my daughter had drawn me a picture. And because she likes me a bit more now she explained that I was no longer falling into lava. In fact I was standing next to my daughter, us both smiling happily and maybe even holding hands. I am not saying I have been emotionally beaten into submission by my captor, but this simple gesture of finally not depicting me as burning to death made me feel inordinately happy. It’s the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen. I’ve blu-tacked it to the wall in front of my desk so I can look at it when I am working to make myself smile.
Though I actually sat and stared at it and made myself cry.
With happiness? Or relief?
One act of love makes all the struggles of parenthood worthwhile.
Most impressively though she has really captured me in this simple drawing - she was annoyed that she forgot my beard, but I am sometimes clean shaven and the hair is spot on. And she’s also captured her own mischievous spirit in her self-portrait.
After school we worked on our film “Killer Robots” and I almost worked out how to edit a video on iMovie on an iPad. And we messed around with filters and titles and added some music. And Phoebe was insistent that I cut a bit at the end where I said we were heading to the Robot HQ because that was in a different part of the film we were ripping off… I mean homaging.
It’s the first Herring and Herring production. Hopefully there will be more. I can’t share it with you for fear that it will be bootlegged which will cut our profits when it gets its cinema release. It’s only about 90 seconds long, but we can probably pad it out with some credits. And I think we did more of this story subsequently so we might add more later.
It turns out that Nora in the Midnight Library Quantum Leaps into herself in the alternate timelines and has to work out where she is and where she lives from scratch. I don’t think that’s a fair way for her to experience her other lives. It means she’s mainly trying to get her bearings (and also occasionally fucks things up for her alternate self) whereas I think she should be living the life properly. Or at least have Al on hand to fill in the gaps. And thus far the arbitrary nature of choosing one of the infinite versions of every part of her life doesn’t seem to be a fair experience. So her decision to go and live in Australia is upended when the friend she goes with dies. So does that mean going to Australia was a mistake? Not necessarily in the infinite versions where her friend didn’t die.
Obviously I’ve thought about this a lot and haven’t totally worked out how to overcome the annoying anti-narrative nature of this stupid scenario myself. Maybe Matt Haig will do so later in the book and think I am going to persist with it, even though it feels like it’s treading on my toes (or I on his). He’s got Carey Mulligan reading the audio book which is a pretty good indication of the fact that it’s going to do well.
I bet if I was in the Universe where my version got made first then I’d find that my daughter only ever drew me falling into lava.

The snooker is ramping up to its final. As I recorded tonight’s quarter final frames I realised that there was a chance that the final could be between two players from the qualifying round (which would be sensational) or we might see Meninist Me take on Female Me. Though those are the more exciting permutations and there’s a lot duller finals possible.
The action was thrilling tonight though.
