This is it! When this entry is complete I will have successfully blogged one quarter of my life. I only have to write two blogs a week for the rest of my days to keep that proportion of my life in blog form. But let’s aim for half my life, hey? It will mean I have to stay alive for another 23 years and be obsessive enough to keep doing this rubbish… Do you think they will still have the internet when I am 70?
Back to the diet tomorrow, but I had a few drinks on the plane in the hope of getting to sleep. But the drunkeness convinced me that it was a good idea to watch “Mrs Brown’s Boys - D’Movie†or as it’s actually called “Brendan O’Carroll’s Mr’s Brown’s Boys - D’Movie†because it’s important that everyone knows who created the character. I think the Alan Partridge Movie was called "Steve Coogan’s Alan Partridge:Alpha Papaâ€. Because that’s what you do if you’re classy.
Whilst slightly bewildered by the success of this throwback sitcom, I still have a grudging respect for it. Firstly it clearly entertains a lot of people and secondly I like the way it slips in some progressive ideas amongst the stereotypes and stolen jokes. So yes we will get to laugh at a John Inman style gay man in a mankini, but the show will also support equal marriage and in the case of the film there’s a slightly syrupy, but positive message about welcoming immigrants. The film made me laugh twice, against my will, which is impressive, though most of the “best†“jokes†were in the trailer. Humour is subjective and this isn’t aimed at me, though as a student of the craft it’s interesting to try and get to the bottom of why it has worked so well and I can see that the characters are likeable and its accessible and fun and plays around with the form, though something like Austin Powers does the same thing and works on a level where comedy connoisseurs can enjoy it as well. The thing that concerns me though is how much the sitcom seems to be based on the template of the sitcom Bread. In fact it’s like Bread, but with some jokes in it. One of the characters even looks like Victor Maguire. If I was Carla Lane I would be asking for some money.
Beneath it all. I still kind of enjoyed it though. They look like they’re having fun, though the fluffs and retake bits seem a bit fake to me. But they might not be. They are. It’s almost the perfect film to watch on a plane though. Something that I wouldn’t watch anywhere else or pay for directly.
I didn’t really sleep and so once we got home I was in a bit of a daze. I weighed myself and was astonished to see that I had put on five kilos, but hoped this was down to some post flight bloating. Indeed by the end of the day I was a kilo and a half lighter and I think things will settle down with me being a couple of kilos up, which is what I was anticipating. We bought the season pass of “The Walking Dead†on iTunes so were able to finish off season 3. They haven’t killed all the zombies yet.
Wow, can't wait for another 23 years of this. Am I right folks? Come on, this is gold.
