Second day in a row where the kids slept in til 7am (my wife thinks it is the new pyjamas my son is wearing that are doing the trick, meaning we have to change him out of them first thing so that he won’t make them unwearably messy at breakfast) and this time I managed to sleep until Ernie woke up. I needed more sleep, but it was enough for me to at least feel vaguely human.
I seized the day and listened to Jon Parkin’s entertaining autobiography whilst walking the dog and then went into town (Hitchin) to pay in the charity money I’ve accrued over the last few gigs and get my hair cut and do a supermarket shop,
By the time I’d done all that it was time to pick my daughter up from school. She still professes to hate me when we have company, even borrowing my phone the other day to sing a song where she said she loved mummy (and everyone at school) but hated Richard. I have to say I enjoyed the double whammy of doing this after I’d been kind enough to lend her the recording equipment, but also that by using my first name she was not only saying she disliked me, but also questioning whether I was even her parent. She is a comedy genius and I have to take comfort from that,.
When we’re alone though she is somewhat kinder to me, admitting that she loves me a tiny bit and happily chatting and joking with me. She’s a lovely girl and like most females she has seen right through me. I love no one more than her and she knows it. And I guess that is all that matters. And I guess you really have to love someone to let them know so persistently that you don’t.
When I got home a car was waiting to take me into town (London) to record a proper TV show. Not sure if I am allowed to write about it, but it was for once not a quiz show, though there was an element of competition. I was comfortably the oldest participant and there were some very strong young comics on the show who were less than half my age. I didn’t tell them that I had fallen asleep in the car on the way there, nor that I feared I might snooze as I waited for my turn.
I was a little out of my comfort zone, but I enjoyed the recording very much and held my own and took the punches that come with the format on the chin. My skin is thick and I like jokes and I even managed to write and adlib some. I never really get asked to do stuff like this and I am not sure why, but it was good to take part and I got some free Nandos and Haribo (not together) and met another non-performing member of the amazing Robbins clan (whose aunty Kate is on RHLSTP very soon) and then got driven home afterwards. But of course now I wasn’t tired. So I wrote this blog instead.
