Whoever decided it was a good idea to put the clocks forward obviously didn’t have a tiny child. If I was in charge the clocks would go back an hour every Saturday night to give parents another hour’s lie-in. Because everyone knows babies respect clocks and only wake up at the appointed hour.
A proper day off today an we went to have lunch with Phoebe’s non-Cheddar based grandparents. She was doted on by both her Nanna and her grandpa and also her great-grandmother, Joy. Alas Phoebe did not meet the other great-grandma that she was named for, but there’s little better than seeing a tiny baby in the arms of someone from three generations before. I don’t think there will be any photos of me with my great-grandchildren, but that’s a very special thing to have.
I became a comedian because I need to be the centre of attention at all times, but I now realise that I should have become a baby. No one can take their eyes off you and everything you do is greeted with delight and cheers. I am sure if I spent all afternoon farting in my in-laws lounge that they would soon become disenchanted with me, but Phoebe guffed and burped her way through the afternoon and practically got a standing ovation for her work. I am as smitten as everyone else, of course. Phoebe is really focusing on stuff now and was taking in all the sights with a quiet sense of wonder. Or maybe superiority.
We had a lovely roast dinner and I found it hard to keep my eyes open once full of food and sitting on the sofa. The others went for a walk as me and Joy had forty winks in the lounge.
And when we got home we decided to have a decadent evening, drinking champagne, eating Kettle crisps (just like the Queen) and scoffing Minstrels. It’s been a while since we’ve done anything like this, as I’ve been dieting and Catie has been growing a human, but it was fun to get tiddly and eat badly, mainly just the two of us, though Phoebe was clearly annoyed to be left out of the fun and came down for part of it. We watched “The Skeleton Twins”. The critics loved it, but it wasn’t exactly what we were looking for tonight. It’s got an amazing cast with Kristen Wiig and "American the actor Kevin Eldon", Bill Hader playing twins and has Ty Burrell from Modern Family. But whilst Wiig and Hader are infectiously ridiculously funny together and apart on Saturday Night Live, this sees all the actors in rather more serious mode and is about suicide and twisted relationships. Which feels like a con. Obviously actors have to be allowed to take on all kinds of roles and I totally hate it when people put me in a  box (either figuratively or literally), but when you see Wiig and Hader on the poster you think you’re going to be in for more laughs.
I think we would have liked the film more another time and there’s no doubting the brilliance of Wiig and Hader, but I just wish there were a few more bits where they were goofing around together, because that is one of the most joyous things you can ever see.
