The morning starts often with the kids singing and dancing to music from Annie or Joseph. Today as they listened to “The sun’ll come out tomorrow,” for a moment I thought that this was a real symbol of hope. Then as Annie bet her bottom dollar on the assertion, but daughter smirked and repeated “bottom” and then my son laughed. And I thought that that was an even better symbol of hope.
In the midst of the awful misery and fear there are plenty of lovely moments and I understand now why people looked back affectionately at the Blitz. Not that this is in any way as bad as that I’m really any sense other than this. But those people must have looked forward to the time it would all be over and have held on to any bright and human moments, knowing that, as long as they survived, they’d be looking back and remembering them fondly and laughing. Without the spectre of fear over their shoulder.
You feel nostalgic for the moment as it is happening, because you know (and hope) you will be looking back at it from a nicer place.
I feel sure that any time we listen to this music in the future (if applicable) I will laugh and remember these sunny and bright breakfasts and forget why the laughs were such a relief.
It was my work day today, but I was too tired to get much done, though am looking forward to writing a chapter about whether one in 8 men could really take a point off of Serena Williams at tennis (spoiler - they couldn’t). I prepared a bit for my evening remote RHLSTP with Adam Buxton - not that I really needed to as the conversation would flow easily and naturally.
All the tech worked somehow and we did 80 minutes of fun and interesting chat. It was a slightly different vibe than a usual RHLSTP of course, but we covered the Coronavirus and double act rivalry and broken mind’s eyes. 3,333 people tuned in at some point, making it the biggest live audience of any RHLSTP.
And it will be out as a podcast in May.
If you enjoy these please follow and subscribe if you can (it’s free if you’re with Amazon Prime)

And there was a regular RHLSTP out today too with Konnie Huq
