We pushed on to the end of Valerian tonight. Not sure why exactly. It would be a much better film if she turned down his proposal at the end.  Especially after he promises to delete his shag-list play-list for her, as if this makes him the most remarkable man in the world.

But today was filled with excitement as the Brian Blessed podcast finally went live (though the Badgers and Dripsters have had it for a couple of days now). My worries that the magic wouldn’t be captured on video and audio proved unfounded. Pretty much everyone was bowled over by the human tsunami that is Blessed. I’ve only dipped in to look at bits, but it seems every second of it is pretty much breathless hilarity.
I’d recommend watching this one, as there’s some spectacular visuals and you get to see the expression on my face

But it’s also on audio if you want to use your imagination.

Several people seem to be calling it the best podcast ever recorded and I am happy to go along with that as I play so little part in it. But i am proud of my persistence in getting him booked and my correct decision to not even attempt to interrupt for the vast majority of the show. I don’t think we can better this one, but we will keep on trying.

And my secret news is now out. Sphere are publishing a brand new bumper volume of Emergency Questions in October. There’s going to be 1001 questions (about 300 in total from the two gofasterstripe books a bit under 200 from the app bonus packs, but 500 unpublished ones). Also some extra bits and bobs like the best answers we’ve had in podcasts (let me know if you’ve seen anyone ask the questions of celebs in other interviews - I’ve seen the Jodie Foster and Ricky Gervais ones). And maybe some illustrations about how to suck your own cock.
It will be in the shops and everything and you can preorder it already.
I still have 400 questions (and 3 sitcom episodes) to write, supposedly by the end of April. But we will get there somehow (and probably in June). But what a delight to be having this silly load of nonsense progress this far.
So today felt like the 10 and a bit years of podcasting have led us somewhere. An almost unbeatable episode of the show plus a way to get paid. But the decade of work to arrive at this point is key, as is the fact that my only aim (beyond maybe getting back on the radio with Collings) was to produce funny shows. This Brian Blessed happening could never have happened on TV (not in anyway the same kind of way). The thing I have always cherished about podcasts is the freedom and autonomy. But with one thing and another I have arrived at a point where I can also make a living (at least in part) from them. Which is the podcast Holy Grail. But only got there because I didn’t care about making money. Ah, the delicious irony.

And sad news at the end of the day that Dale Winton had died. He was such a good sport when he appeared on the radio version of Fist of Fun and I feel like that day was the moment he realised that he had become a phenomena. Before the show he seemed worried that he might have blown his career by being on Supermarket Sweep, but the reaction of the student audience confirmed his god-like status. Have I romanticised that story? Was it really the moment he realised? Maybe, maybe not. This is how you turn into Brian Blessed. But certainly he enjoyed the night and was the sweet man that everyone seems to remember. I am very grateful to him for taking the chance and being on our childish show. And very sad to see him bowing out so young. Supermarket Sweep was basically the epitome of the early 90s for me. Next time I’m at the check out and I hear the beep, I will think of the fun I could be having on Supermarket Sweep.
