Richard Herring's Hitler Moustache is fascinating

DVD review: Hitler Moustache by Richard Herring is a fascinating look into the toothbrush moustache, but is let down by slightly waffly first half.

Of the many shows comedian Richard Herring has produced over the past two decades, Hitler Moustache has to be one of the most fascinating. He delivers a set that wonders how the ‘toothbrush moustache’ has come to symbolise Nazi infamy (when worn by Hitler), when it used to be a symbol of comedy (when worn by Charlie Chaplin).

What results is a show that deliberately follows in the spirit of Chaplin’s controversial talkie, The Great Dictator, by reclaiming the moustache for comedy and using it to satirise prejudice on a broader scale. Jokes about race, religion and fascism are inevitably present, and there’s a galvanising call to arms to the people of Cardiff (this was filmed at the city’s Chapter Arts Centre earlier this year) against the kind of voter apathy that led to the BNP’s success at the 2009 European elections.

A great, politically charged show but one that’s let down by a slightly waffly first half and some occasionally clunky filming.
