Corn Exchange, Brighton Dome, Church Street, Friday.

Having dealt with his midlife crisis in his last show, Richard Herring delves deep into his childhood for the follow-up.

In doing so, he has unearthed a slice of comedy gold which held a resonance for anyone who remembers being an awkward teenager.

The Headmaster’s Son was Herring, a 41 year old single, sex-obsessed comic, trying to find out whether he can pin anything wrong in his life on his father, who was also his secondary school headmaster.

Herring read from his teenage diary, argued with his younger self and recalled coming second to Steve Cheek in everything but maths and history.

It was a life affirming examination of childhood ambition with a definite bittersweet edge.
