41st BEST STAND-UP EVER ALAN PARKER'S URBAN WARRIORS LIVE DATES INTERIORS 90'S COMEDIAN + RICHARD HERRING WHAT'S ON
41ST BEST STAND-UP EVER Channel 4 viewers will have seen how I was named 41st Best Stand-Up Ever in a Channel 4 poll in March. There is much discussion about how this poll was made the fact that sweary comics arrived after the watershed, that clearly myself, Kitson and Sadowitz had been put in to give an illusion of 'edge', just as Manning, Davidson etc had been included to give an illusion of balance, and just how did the 150000 votes work exactly, and who were these 'experts' etc... But the result remains, and it would be churlish and unsporting for people to quibble with the fact that I am THE 41ST GREATEST STAND-UP OF ALL TIME. In the light of this I have re-named my Edinburgh show 41st Best Stand-Up Ever.

Interiors I am co-writing a site-specific theatre piece for the M'cr festival with Johnny Vegas called Interiors which will run from the start of July. Chortle story on this - Johnny Vegas has unveiled his first theatre work a collaboration with Stewart Lee about Britain's property obsession. Interiors will premiere at the first-ever Manchester International Festival, a highbrow arts event which starts on June 28. Speaking at the festival's launch, Vegas promised: 'I'm breaking free of what theatre ought to be.' In Interiors, which he co-wrote with Lee, Vegas plays a homeowner selling his £235,000 property to pursue 'development opportunities" in Montenegro', while the audience are the prospective buyers. 'I'm forcing myself to get in touch with my metrosexual side,' he said. 'Normally, I sit in the car park when the family goes to Ikea. 'I've promised everyone I'd not say too much about it because it's so hard to talk about it without giving the game away. 'I've never written a theatre piece before, but, whatever medium you're working in, you should always write about what you know. And everyone knows about property, don't they? We're all obsessed by it. 'I hate to use the word accessible, but I'm hoping that this is a theatre piece for those who maybe haven't been to the theatre before. 'For me, it's an opportunity to work in the theatre without getting too daunted by it.' And he said he had high hopes for the festival. 'Everyone used to think that you should head to London to make it in stand-up,' he said. 'Now it seems like the common sense thing to do is to leave London for Manchester to get ahead. I'm very proud of my roots.' Others involved in the festival include Damon Albarn, who has provided the music for a new circus opera based on Chinese legend; Carlos Acosta, who is hailed as the world's greatest male ballet dancer; chef Heston Blumenthal who will create the food for the event; plus gigs from Kanye West, Lou Reed, PJ Harvey, The Happy Mondays and The Fall.
90's COMEDIAN ON DVD SECOND PRESSING + RICHARD HERRING DVD Cardiff Comedy mavericks Go Faster Stripe shot the show in February last year, and it's available on DVD for only £10. I plan to flog these at gigs in late 2007 but the initial print run of 1000 has sold out, and there is now a second run. Check their website to get them, and please don't bootleg them all over the place and sell them on e-bay. I NEED THIS. www.gofasterstripe.com
Richard Herring, who I used to work with, has exactly copied me by doing a DVD with Go Faster Stripe too, The 12 Tasks Of Hercules Terrace. His is not as good and so sells for only 8 pounds plus p&p. You even get a programme for the show thrown in for nothing. Go Faster did not film this show and it is not up to the high quality that you would usually expect from them, but it's still perfectly watchable and is a good record of a show that would otherwise have passed into oblivion. The slight reduction in quality is reflected in the cheaper than usual price, and also because it is not as good as my one.
Chortle Story on this - New DVDs from Simon Munnery, Richard Herring and Tony Law are in the pipeline from a company set up to market comedians not famous enough for large-scale releases. Go Faster Stripe launched late last year with Stewart Lee's show 90s Comedian. He had a commercial release, Stand-Up Comedian, on the 2Entertain label a year previously, but sales were too low for a follow-up. Company boss Chris Evans said: 'When I heard his first DVD sold so badly that no one wanted anything to do with a follow-up, I thought it was a great shame that a great show would disappear. 'So I gathered together a rag-tag team of friends and offered to record the new show for a possible release. It came out rather well, so we got it ready for sale at a wallet-friendly £10.' The company has since released a bootleg-quality recording of Richard Herring's The 12 Tasks Of Hercules Terrace for £8, too. Another of his shows, Someone Likes Yoghurt, is awaiting a censor's certificate before that, too, is released. Now they are recording Herring's 2006 Edinburgh show, Menage A Un, at Cardiff's Chapter Arts Centre on June 2. Simon Munnery will tape his show, to be called Hello, at the same venue on May 25, while. Tony Law's recording dates are yet to be finalised. Evans said: 'We are hoping these DVDs could be another outlet for the stand-up comedians that are fantastic, yet constantly overlooked by other media.'
